Armchair Heroes
Paul Agostino
Everywhere I go, people stop and ask me, "Paul, what do you think about what happened down in Virginia? We've heard from everyone else, but now we want the truth."

All right. Here goes.

The Constitution guarantees all U.S. citizens the right of freedom of expression, conscience, assembly, and (peaceful) protest -- everybody, not just you and your group. Don't blame me, blame Jefferson and Co. It is the government's job to ensure that those rights are protected. But the state and local government down in Charlottesville and the fair state of Virginia did a very poor job of protecting the rights of both the demonstrators and the protesters. The state and local government, and law enforcement, had plenty of forewarning about the demonstration, and should have figured there was going to be a protest-backlash, but they seemed unprepared for what occurred. In common terms, they fucked up. And yet, they seem to have avoided criticism in most quarters.

But not here.

I would say there is plenty of blame to go around on all sides of this ugly incident, but you don't want to hear that, do you? You want to hear about Nazis and Hitler and Liberal Fascists and you all want to be Armchair Patrick Henrys. Well, here's a miserable little fact for all you deeply caring freedom-fighters: Since the beginning of 2016, 2,000 people have been killed and 4,000 people injured in terrorist attacks throughout the world, and most of the people were innocent victims. But most of the attacks happened in Muslim countries, so you don't know any of the names of the victims, know anything about their histories, and are not posting their faces on your Facebook page. And yet these people were just as involved in their lives as you are in yours. And now they're dead and their friends and families live in a state of devastation. But I don't see anybody making a fuss about them. But then, it didn't happen in The Greatest Country in the World, and no Nazis were involved, so it's not really news, is it?

All lives matter, folks, not just the ones that are reported about on your favorite "news" channel.

For Chrissake, don't you ever get tired of swallowing and spitting out the same old bullshit?
